Golf on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Edge

Ireland’s northwest feels different from the moment you arrive. The landscape is wilder, the roads are quieter and the golf courses sit naturally among dunes, beaches and rugged Atlantic coastline. This tour takes you through Donegal and Sligo, pairing some of Ireland’s most exciting links with a part of the country many golfers never reach. The itinerary features Donegal Golf Club, Narin & Portnoo, St Patrick’s Links, County Sligo and Enniscrone. Donegal sets the tone with a traditional links layout on the Murvagh Peninsula, surrounded by the Atlantic and Donegal Bay. Narin & Portnoo follows with spectacular coastal scenery and a course that twists through natural dunes beside the sea.

One of the biggest draws is St Patrick’s Links at Rosapenna, a modern links designed by Tom Doak that has quickly established itself among Ireland’s most talked-about courses. Farther south, County Sligo at Rosses Point brings championship pedigree and views toward Benbulben, while Enniscrone finishes the lineup with towering dunes and the wonderfully unpredictable golf that makes Irish links so much fun.

Between rounds, the route takes you through a corner of Ireland known for its mountains, dramatic coastline and small towns. The Wild Atlantic Way runs through the region, with Donegal and Sligo offering some of its most rugged scenery. For golfers who have already seen Ireland’s famous southwest or simply want to venture somewhere less traveled, the northwest makes a compelling case.

Itinerary

Be advised that the itinerary is subject to confirmation.

Welcome to Ireland. On arrival at Dublin Airport, meet your private driver and travel northwest to Donegal Town, where you’ll check in at The Abbey Hotel Donegal for a two-night stay.

Set in the heart of town, the hotel provides a comfortable and convenient introduction to County Donegal. Settle into your room and enjoy the remainder of the day at your own pace, with Donegal Town’s restaurants, pubs and local atmosphere right on your doorstep.

Your first round takes you to Narin & Portnoo Links, a spectacular course on County Donegal’s wild Atlantic coastline. Natural dunes, rugged terrain and sweeping views across Gweebarra Bay create a peaceful and authentic introduction to northwest Irish links golf.

After your round, enjoy lunch and a pint included with your green fee, before returning to Donegal Town for your final evening at The Abbey Hotel.

Check out of The Abbey Hotel before taking on Donegal Golf Club, beautifully positioned on the Murvagh Peninsula. Designed by Eddie Hackett, the course runs through rolling dunes with Donegal Bay, sweeping beaches and the Bluestack Mountains providing an impressive backdrop.

After golf, continue north to Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort for a two-night stay. Set on the shores of Sheephaven Bay, the resort combines comfortable accommodations with a spectacular coastal setting and easy access to some of Donegal’s finest links golf.

Today you’ll play Portsalon Golf Club, a historic championship links overlooking the shores of Lough Swilly. Established in 1891 and later redesigned by Pat Ruddy, the course combines rolling dunes, firm links turf and natural contours with outstanding coastal views.

Creativity and strategic shot-making are rewarded throughout the round, making Portsalon an excellent complement to the other links on your Donegal journey. After golf, return to Rosapenna for your final evening at the resort.

Your final Donegal round takes place on St Patrick’s Links at Rosapenna Resort, the acclaimed modern links designed by Tom Doak. Opened in 2021, its wide fairways weave through a dramatic natural dune landscape overlooking Sheephaven Bay.

Following your round, continue south to Sligo and check in at The Glasshouse Hotel for three nights. Set beside the Garavogue River in the heart of town, it provides a stylish and convenient base for the final stage of your northwest Ireland golf journey.

Head to Rosses Point for a round on the Colt Championship Links at County Sligo Golf Club, a traditional Harry Colt-designed course surrounded by some of northwest Ireland’s most memorable scenery.

Firm fairways, natural dunes and fast greens provide a classic links challenge, with the Atlantic coastline and Benbulben creating a dramatic backdrop. The course is also home to the prestigious West of Ireland Championship and has tested generations of Ireland’s leading amateur golfers.

Your final round takes you to The Dunes Course at Enniscrone Golf Club, where some of Ireland’s largest sand dunes create a spectacular setting beside the Atlantic.

Originally designed by Eddie Hackett and later enhanced by Donald Steel, the course combines wide fairways, strategically positioned greens and constantly changing coastal conditions. It’s a memorable final test and a fitting way to complete your journey through the links of Donegal and Sligo.

Check out of The Glasshouse Hotel and meet your private driver for the journey back to Dublin Airport.

After eight days combining six distinctive links courses with the wild coastal landscapes of Donegal and Sligo, depart Ireland with unforgettable memories of your northwest golf experience.

Is This Tour Right For Me?

This tour is for golfers who like the idea of getting away from Ireland’s busiest golf routes. The northwest is more remote than Dublin or the southwest, but that is a big part of its appeal. You will spend the week surrounded by Atlantic coastline, open countryside and traditional Irish towns, with some exceptional golf waiting along the way.

The courses are the real attraction. St Patrick’s Links brings a modern interpretation of links golf, while Donegal, County Sligo and Enniscrone offer the character and unpredictability you would expect from established Irish layouts. Narin & Portnoo adds another scenic coastal round to a lineup with very few weak spots.

You should be comfortable with a trip that involves some time on the road. Courses are spread across Donegal and Sligo, so this is more of a journey than a single-base golf vacation. In return, you get to experience a quieter side of Ireland that many international visitors miss.

If you want outstanding links, fewer crowds and a genuine sense of adventure, Ireland’s wild northwest is exactly where you should be heading.
