Championship Links, Dublin Style

Ireland’s east coast offers a different kind of golf trip. You still get the traditional links, seaside settings and unpredictable conditions you expect from Ireland, but with Dublin as your base, there is just as much to look forward to once the final putt drops.

The tour brings together five of the region’s standout courses: Portmarnock, The Island, County Louth, Royal Dublin and Jameson Links. Each has its own character. Portmarnock is the headline act, a historic championship links that has hosted some of the biggest events in Irish golf. The Island takes you into towering dunes and feels remarkably secluded despite its proximity to the capital, while County Louth, better known locally as Baltray, rewards creative shot-making on fast, natural links terrain.

Closer to the city, Royal Dublin delivers traditional links golf on Bull Island, with more than a century of history behind it. Jameson Links completes the lineup, bringing a modern edge to the trip while staying true to its coastal surroundings.

One of the biggest advantages of this itinerary is how easily the golf and city experience fit together. Rather than changing hotels as you work your way around Ireland, you can settle into Dublin and head out to a different course each day. The capital is then yours to enjoy in the evenings, whether that means a few pints in a traditional pub, live music or dinner in the city.

For American golfers who want a first taste of Irish links without spending the week traveling between hotels, this is an excellent place to start.

Itinerary

Welcome to Ireland. On arrival at Dublin Airport, make your way into the heart of the capital and check in at The Trinity City Hotel for a seven-night stay.

Ideally located near Trinity College, Temple Bar and many of Dublin’s best-known attractions, the hotel provides a stylish and convenient base for the week. Settle into your Contemporary Room and enjoy the remainder of the day exploring the city at your own pace.

Your first round takes you to The Island Golf Club, a historic links set on a unique peninsula between the Irish Sea and Broadmeadow Estuary.

Established in 1890, the course winds through natural dunes with firm fairways and ever-changing coastal winds creating a true links challenge. Its peaceful setting and traditional character provide a memorable introduction to golf around Dublin.

Today you’ll play one of Ireland’s most celebrated championship links at Portmarnock Golf Club. Set on a narrow peninsula north of Dublin, the Irish Sea surrounds much of the course and plays an important role in the experience.

Firm playing surfaces and strategic design create a classic test of links golf, while a long history of hosting prestigious championships adds to the occasion. Lunch is included with your green fee, and the club operates a strict dress code.

Take a break from the golf and enjoy a full day exploring Dublin at your own pace. With your hotel in the heart of the city, many of the capital’s major attractions are within easy reach.

Discover Dublin’s historic streets and museums, shop along Grafton Street, or spend the afternoon experiencing the city’s traditional pubs, restaurants and cafés. The day is completely yours to enjoy.

Return to the links at Brittas Bay Club, formerly known as The European Club, for a distinctive round along the County Wicklow coastline.

Originally designed by Pat Ruddy and reimagined by Kyle Phillips, the course runs through dramatic coastal dunes overlooking the Irish Sea. Firm fairways, natural links terrain and impressive sea views combine for a memorable day of golf.

Today brings a round at The Royal Dublin Golf Club, a historic Harry Colt-designed links located on Bull Island in Dublin Bay.

Sweeping fairways, natural dunes, strategic bunkering and fast-running surfaces provide a traditional Irish links experience, with views toward Howth and the Dublin coastline throughout the round. A mandatory forecaddie is required for groups of three or more golfers and is payable directly to the club.

Your final round takes you north of Dublin to County Louth Golf Club, better known as Baltray. The championship links winds through towering natural dunes, with firm fairways, challenging bunkers and fast greens providing a fitting final test.

Having hosted multiple Irish Opens and numerous national championships, Baltray combines championship pedigree with pure links character and spectacular coastal scenery. A mandatory forecaddie is required per group and is payable directly to the club.

Check out of The Trinity City Hotel after seven nights in the heart of Dublin and continue to Dublin Airport for your journey home.

After five outstanding rounds and time to experience Ireland’s vibrant capital, depart with unforgettable memories of championship links golf and Dublin city life.

Is This Tour Right For Me?

This tour works particularly well if you want serious links golf without giving up the energy of a city stay. Dublin gives you a lively base for the week, while some of Ireland’s best courses are waiting along the coastline each day. The east coast is particularly convenient for international visitors, with Dublin Airport close to both the city and many of the surrounding golf areas.

On the course, expect the full Irish links experience. Wind, firm turf, deep bunkers and natural contours mean you will need more than one type of shot in the bag. The Island’s dramatic dunes feel very different from the traditional challenge at Royal Dublin, while Portmarnock and County Louth provide the kind of championship test that makes a trip across the Atlantic worthwhile.

It is also a good choice for groups with different interests. The golf remains the focus, but staying around Dublin means the day does not end when you leave the course.

If you want to play renowned Irish links by day and experience Dublin by night, this tour gives you the best of both.
