West Lancashire Golf Club, founded in 1873, holds the distinction of being among the ten oldest golf clubs in England and the oldest in the county of Lancashire. Established by members of Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) who sought to expand the game across the Mersey, its history is deeply intertwined with the development of golf in the Northwest.
The present-day 18-hole championship links (Par 72, Max Tees: 7,016 yards) was largely designed by the well-regarded architect C.K. Cotton in the early 1960s, though it bears the imprint of earlier masters like Tom Dunn and James Braid. The course is defined by its natural, undulating linksland, providing a challenging and varied layout that regularly serves as Final Qualifying for The Open Championship when it is held at nearby Royal Birkdale and Royal Liverpool.

This course truly epitomizes the “true flavor of seaside golf,” as famously described by Donald Steel. The design is laid out in two loops, with the 9th and 18th greens returning to the clubhouse. You’ll find yourself immediately confronted with the challenges of classic links golf: humps, hollows, and severely penal pot bunkers. The course is known for its subtly raised greens, often set on plateaus with treacherous run-off areas that severely punish errant approach shots.
With eleven holes measuring over 400 yards from the back tees, solid striking is essential. For many golfers, the run from the 12th through the 14th is the highlight, featuring a demanding uphill Par 3 and the stunning, elevated 13th tee that offers spectacular panoramic views across the Mersey Estuary toward the Welsh Mountains. It’s a beautifully natural, high-quality test that asks you to think your way around rather than simply hit it hard.
