Royal Liverpool Golf Club, universally known as Hoylake, is a genuine pillar of links golf history, located on the northern coast of the Wirral Peninsula. Founded in 1869 on land that was originally a horse racing track (a heritage echoed in the names of the 1st and 18th holes: “Course” and “Stand”), this 18-hole championship links (Par 72, Max Tees: approximately 7,341 yards) has hosted The Open Championship an incredible thirteen times, most recently in 2023.
The original layout was established by Robert Chambers and George Morris (brother of Old Tom Morris), but the course has been continually refined by titans like Harry Colt, Donald Steel, and Martin Ebert. Hoylake holds an especially important place in the amateur game, having hosted the first-ever Amateur Championship and being the birthplace of the Walker Cup competition. Iconic champions here include Bobby Jones, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIlroy.
