36 Holes of History and Challenge

Royal Liverpool Golf Club, universally known as Hoylake, is a genuine pillar of links golf history, located on the northern coast of the Wirral Peninsula. Founded in 1869 on land that was originally a horse racing track (a heritage echoed in the names of the 1st and 18th holes: “Course” and “Stand”), this 18-hole championship links (Par 72, Max Tees: approximately 7,341 yards) has hosted The Open Championship an incredible thirteen times, most recently in 2023.

The original layout was established by Robert Chambers and George Morris (brother of Old Tom Morris), but the course has been continually refined by titans like Harry Colt, Donald Steel, and Martin Ebert. Hoylake holds an especially important place in the amateur game, having hosted the first-ever Amateur Championship and being the birthplace of the Walker Cup competition. Iconic champions here include Bobby Jones, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIlroy.

Key Information

Hoylake is a truly tactical test of links golf. Unlike some of its dune-heavy neighbors, the course is built on largely flat ground, giving it an appearance of subtlety that hides a relentless challenge. The ground itself is firm and fast, and the greens are known for their tricky contours. The primary defense, as with any great links, is the wind, which changes daily and dictates a completely different strategy for almost every round. The initial and closing holes play across the flat of the former racecourse, demanding precision rather than power.

However, the holes running along the Dee Estuary and the Irish Sea—especially the stretch from the 8th through the 12th—are where the course’s visual and architectural brilliance shines, many of which were improved by Harry Colt. The recent addition of the dramatic, short Par-3 17th, “Little Eye,” designed by Martin Ebert, has added a modern element of high drama to the closing stretch, requiring an absolutely pure strike to avoid cavernous bunkers. Playing here is less about heroic carries and more about positioning and controlling the ball along the ground.

A Sanctuary by the Sea

Royal Liverpool embodies the history and tradition of the English golf coast, offering an experience that is both demanding on the course and deeply welcoming off it. The clubhouse is a museum of golfing history, containing artifacts and memorabilia from its countless championships, giving the traveling golfer a genuine sense of connection to the game’s past. Its location is ideal for an English golf vacation, forming one of the “Big Three” links alongside nearby Royal Birkdale and Royal Lytham & St Annes, with Wallasey just down the road.

Visitor access is generally restricted to Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, making planning essential. Securing a tee time at this Open venue is a highlight of any trip to England. Given its stature and the complex visitor booking system, working with an experienced golf travel company is the most reliable way to guarantee your spot on these historic links.
