Royal Birkdale stands as a towering giant on the international golf stage, having hosted more major and international championships since World War Two than any other course in the world. Established in 1889, the club was granted its Royal title in 1951, just before hosting its first Open Championship in 1954. This 18-hole championship links (Par 70 from the Championship Tees; 72 from the Yellow Tees, Max Tees: approximately 7,156 yards) runs through magnificent, imposing sand dunes.
The course, largely influenced by the Hawtree family and J.H. Taylor, was designed specifically to route the holes through the natural valleys between the dunes rather than over them. This deliberate routing is what makes Birkdale famous for being a stern yet exceptionally fair test of golf, perfectly rewarding the straight shot and punishing wayward ones that get devoured by the rough on the steep dune faces.

Birkdale is a pure links experience that offers minimal blind shots, presenting the task clearly from every tee. The fairways are generally flat and firm, but the sheer scale of the dunes that flank them makes every hole feel secluded and monumental. The course constantly twists and turns, ensuring that the wind—the course’s true defense—comes from a different direction on nearly every hole, demanding constant adaptability in club and shot selection.
The four Par 3s are a highlight, particularly the iconic 12th, which plays to a green set dramatically in an amphitheater of dunes. The finishing stretch, leading back to the unforgettable clubhouse, is steeped in history, concluding with the Par 5 18th that plays up toward that famous Art Deco structure. It’s a true intellectual challenge that consistently rewards the disciplined, straight striker.
