Hillside Golf Club stands proudly alongside its celebrated neighbors, Royal Birkdale and Southport & Ainsdale, forming an intimidating cluster of championship links on the Lancashire coast. Founded in 1911, the 18-hole links (Par 72, Max Tees: 7,029 yards) boasts a unique design history.
While the club’s origins are earlier, the current, iconic layout was largely sculpted in the 1960s by architect Fred Hawtree, who routed the back nine through some of the wildest and highest sand dunes found anywhere in the region. More recently, Martin Ebert has refined the front nine to elevate the entire experience. This pedigree ensures the course is frequently selected to host top events, including the DP World Tour’s Cazoo Classic and regularly serving as a Final Qualifying venue for The Open Championship.

This stretch provides a fair but testing start, characterized by pine-lined fairways and subtle bunkering that demands accuracy off the tee. However, it’s the back nine that has cemented the course’s legendary status. Beginning with the spectacular 10th hole, you are immediately plunged into a landscape of massive, towering dunes.
This section is routed through valleyed corridors, featuring dramatic elevation changes and elevated tees that provide breathtaking views over the Irish Sea and the neighboring links. It was this unforgettable back nine that prompted Greg Norman to famously declare them “the best in Britain.” Playing through this secluded, monumental terrain is a sustained assault on the senses, requiring power, precision, and an appreciation for the game at its wildest.
