Essential Details

This is one for the bucket list, no question. TPC Scottsdale is the permanent, celebrated host of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, a tournament known globally for its unparalleled crowds and energy. The property features 36 holes, but the star is the Stadium Course (Par 71, Black Tees: 7,261 yards). Designed by the dynamic duo of Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish and opened back in 1986, it was specifically commissioned by the PGA TOUR to create a venue that would test the world’s best while offering spectacular spectator viewing.

Weiskopf’s design philosophy here favors a more open, friendly desert style than some of its tighter neighbors, with subtle green contours and relatively little elevation change, though a full-course renovation in 2014 ensured it remains a challenge. The fact that you can walk these same fairways, which are maintained year-round to tournament standards, is why it’s such a pilgrimage for travelers.

Key Information

The Stadium Course is essentially a masterclass in risk-reward strategy, particularly on the back nine. Weiskopf and Morrish intentionally crafted a closing stretch that makes for high drama and great viewing, and you’ll find it incredibly exciting to play. The overall course is sculpted from the Sonoran Desert floor, offering a stunning backdrop of the McDowell Mountains. While many desert courses are tight and unforgiving, the Stadium Course is surprisingly generous off the tee, encouraging you to hit the driver and create opportunities.

That said, the challenge really arrives as you approach the green complexes. For many golfers, the run from 15 through 17 is the undeniable highlight. The Par-5 15th dares you to go for the island green in two, while the Par-3 16th is the world-famous hole that transforms into the loudest stadium in golf during the Open. Worth noting, even without the grandstands, the tabletop green and surrounding bunkers demand a pure, committed strike. Then you get to the drivable Par-4 17th, with water guarding the left side, presenting a heroic choice for a finishing birdie. It’s an exhilarating sequence that simply must be experienced.

Beyond the Fairways, Seamless Golf Vacation

TPC Scottsdale is situated in a prime North Scottsdale location, offering immediate proximity to some of the area’s best resorts, like the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. This isn’t just a day trip; it’s the centerpiece of a high-end golf vacation. The club also features the excellent Champions Course, a complete redesign of the former Desert Course by Randy Heckenkemper. It’s a compelling, challenging layout in its own right, often providing a little better value and a chance to truly experience the natural flow of the desert terrain.

The clubhouse offers fantastic dining, most famously the Toro Restaurant & Rum Bar, perfect for a celebratory post-round meal. For the experienced traveler, the best time to play is definitely the shoulder season, or perhaps even in the weeks immediately following the Phoenix Open when the grandstands are still partially erected. That added atmosphere is really special. Securing one of these highly sought-after tee times—especially during peak season—requires planning and expertise.
