Heritage and Championship Pedigree
Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club is indisputably one of the most celebrated links courses in the world, holding a unique status on the English coast. Founded in 1886, the course occupies a slightly less dramatic, flatter piece of linksland near the seaside town of Lytham St Annes. This 18-hole championship layout (Par 70, Max Tees: approximately 7,100 yards) is renowned as an extremely difficult, strategic test.
The course was largely influenced by Harry Colt and has hosted The Open Championship eleven times, including Bobby Jones’s 1926 victory and Severiano Ballesteros’s legendary 1979 and 1988 wins. Lytham is famous for beginning with a Par 3—the only Open venue to do so—and is instantly recognizable by the imposing red-brick clubhouse that stands watch over the final two holes.

Key Information
Lytham is a relentless examination of accuracy and nerve. Unlike Birkdale’s open, valleyed feel or Formby’s pine corridors, this course uses its flat terrain to maximize the hazard count—specifically, over 200 pot bunkers meticulously placed to catch anything less than a perfect shot. The difficulty starts immediately with the 200-yard Par-3 opening hole. From there, the course unfolds as a tactical masterclass, requiring precise iron play and careful planning off the tee to avoid the endless array of sand.
The prevailing wind off the Irish Sea adds an unpredictable element, often dictating which lines you simply cannot afford to miss. The finishing stretch, playing back toward the iconic clubhouse, is one of the most famous in golf, requiring absolute commitment on the approaches to the tightly guarded greens. This course is a demanding, cerebral challenge that rewards the disciplined, experienced golfer who respects its unforgiving design.

5 star service
What a brilliant service from them. Booked 1 night 2 rounds at Stoke by Nayland and everything was perfect. Their expertise is faultless and all 36 of us thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The staff at resort were amazing and so was the food and course. Highly recommend using this company and Ian is a diamond to deal with. 5 Stars plus lads.

Clubhouse Life and Seamless Access
Royal Lytham & St Annes embodies the most formal and traditional elements of English links golf. The clubhouse, famous for its grand, towering appearance, is a repository of history, filled with artifacts from its many Open Championships. Visitors will find the atmosphere to be respectful, professional, and entirely focused on the game’s tradition. While located in a quiet coastal town, the club is centrally positioned to anchor a tour of the Lancashire coast, making it easily accessible from both the Southport and Liverpool areas. Visitor access is strictly controlled and typically limited to certain days of the week, underscoring the course’s exclusive status. For the traveling golfer, securing a tee time here is a genuine achievement and requires proactive planning far in advance.
