Heritage and Championship Pedigree
Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, universally known as Deal, stands as a historic jewel on the Kent coast, positioned just south of its neighbor, Royal St George’s. Founded in 1892, this 18-hole championship links (Par 71, Max Tees: approximately 7,170 yards) is characterized by its powerful defense and classic, straightforward architecture. Deal hosted The Open Championship twice, in 1909 and 1920, and has maintained its status as a premier links test ever since, regularly serving as an Open Championship Final Qualifying venue.
The course was originally laid out by Henry Hunter and later refined by James Braid, ensuring a pedigree rooted in the game’s golden age of design. Its history is notably tied to the sea, as coastal erosion forced significant rerouting over the years, contributing to its unique character and reputation for being a relentless finish.

Key Information
Deal offers a pure, traditional links experience that is deceptively challenging. The course occupies a relatively flat piece of ground, running parallel to the English Channel, but the firm, fast turf and the persistent coastal wind provide all the defense necessary. The design is tactical, relying on well-placed, deep pot bunkers and the natural undulations of the linksland. The course builds subtly to its magnificent, fearsome climax.
The closing stretch—particularly the final six holes, which play directly back toward the clubhouse—is widely considered one of the most demanding finishes in championship golf, especially when the wind is blowing off the Channel. It’s a true intellectual challenge that rewards controlled ball striking and a masterful ground game, making it a favorite among experienced golfers who appreciate classic, authentic architecture.
