Heritage and Unconventional Design
The Isle of Purbeck Golf Club, perched high above Poole Harbour and Swanage Bay, is less about championship history and more about unforgettable scenery and unconventional, fun golf. Established in 1892, this 18-hole course (Par 70, Max Tees: approximately 6,039 yards) is shorter than modern championship tracks, but it is defined by its wildly undulating terrain and breathtaking views of the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast.
The course combines elements of heathland, with gorse and heather, and linksland, with its firm, exposed position. The layout has evolved through various influences, most notably featuring revisions by Tom Dunn and later, the famous golf writer Bernard Darwin. It is the highest course in Dorset and promises a unique, charming, and highly memorable round.

Key Information
Playing the Isle of Purbeck is primarily a scenic experience, but it is certainly not without challenge. The course is built on a high plateau, making it incredibly exposed to the wind, which acts as the chief defense against its shorter length. The undulating fairways are firm, and the course weaves through natural gorse and heather, demanding accuracy. Because of the constant, dramatic elevation changes, you’ll find yourself hitting off some truly challenging lies.
It’s a course that rewards strategy over brute force, and because of the views from nearly every tee, it’s easy to forgive the occasional quirky bounce. Many travelers consider the views from the 7th and 8th holes—looking out across Poole Harbour and the distant Solent—to be among the best in the UK. This course is about enjoyment, charm, and an utterly unique integration of golf and natural landscape.
