A Timeless Lancashire Classic
Formby Golf Club is a truly unique destination on the famed Lancashire Golf Coast, standing apart from its neighbors due to its unusual and beautiful combination of mature pine woodland and towering coastal dunes. This 18-hole championship links (Par 72, Max Tees: approximately 7,031 yards) was established in 1884, with its layout evolving over the years through the influence of several architects, including Willie Park Jr. and later, James Braid. Critically, the course wraps around the historic Formby Ladies Golf Club, adding to the site’s distinct character.
Formby is highly regarded for its natural beauty and challenging design, having consistently hosted major amateur events, including the Amateur Championship, and serving as an Open Championship Final Qualifying venue. Its conditioning is famously superb, making it a firm favorite among golf travelers seeking a classic, high-quality links experience.

Key Information
What sets Formby apart is the incredible contrast between its open links holes and the holes routed through the dense, magnificent pine trees. You’ll find yourself hitting drives over massive, windswept sand dunes one minute, and then navigating tight, tree-lined fairways the next. This hybrid environment demands a complete repertoire of shots, forcing you to adjust both trajectory and club selection constantly.
The course truly rewards strategic placement, rather than just raw power. The greens are complex, protected by deep pot bunkers and the surrounding vegetation. The Par-3s here are exceptional, particularly the 15th, which is often considered one of the finest in the world, playing from a high tee through the dunes to a green framed by pines. It’s an aesthetically beautiful course that is tough but fair, offering a genuine sense of adventure and a memorable shift from the pure, flat links found elsewhere along the coast.

A Sanctuary by the Sea
Formby’s location is beautifully secluded, nestled in a quiet, affluent coastal village that offers a perfect sanctuary away from the bustle of nearby cities. While the focus here is undoubtedly the golf, the club has perfected the art of high-end, traditional hospitality. The charming clubhouse maintains the warm, welcoming atmosphere typical of the best British clubs, providing excellent dining and a perfect place to relax post-round.
A significant advantage for traveling golfers is the availability of on-site accommodation in the club’s Dormy House. Staying right on the grounds offers preferred access and a truly immersive, classic links experience. Its proximity to Royal Birkdale, Royal Liverpool, and Southport & Ainsdale makes Formby an essential, distinctive piece of any comprehensive golf tour of the English coast.
