Perched on a magnificent 220-acre diamond of rock jutting two miles into the Atlantic, the Old Head Golf Links is pure drama. It’s really less of a course and more of a pilgrimage for the discerning traveler. Designed by a collective that included Ron Kirby, Paddy Merrigan, the late Joe Carr, Eddie Hackett, and Dr. Joe Brolly, it officially opened for play in 1997.
It measures in at a hearty 7,200 yards from the tips, playing to a par of 72. That said, it’s not the length that challenges you, it’s the constant exposure and the demand for pure striking. This is an authentic links-style experience on an unbelievably unique piece of Irish coastline. The course is a high-end resort offering, but it feels completely secluded and private once you’re on the property.

Key Information
The minute you drive through the gate and see the lighthouse and the sheer drop to the water, you understand why this place is globally famous. For many golfers, the sheer spectacle almost overshadows the quality of the golf, but that’s a mistake. This is a wonderfully challenging, authentic links experience. The design philosophy is simple: let the stunning headland speak for itself while still demanding precision and creativity from the player.
It’s a pretty open layout, but the ever-present wind is the real defense. The front nine starts strong with some elevated tees and finishes with a flourish. That said, it’s the back nine where you really feel the drama build. Holes 12 through 18 trace the cliff’s edge almost entirely, giving you a relentless series of photo opportunities and demanding shots that require absolute commitment. It’s easy to see why the 12th, a par five that arcs around the water, is often considered the signature hole, but the finishing stretch is just as captivating.
