MacKenzie’s Irish Masterpiece
This is a quintessential Irish championship layout. You’re playing over a historic Alister MacKenzie design, the same genius responsible for Augusta National and Cypress Point, so you know the bones of the course are exceptional. It was first founded in 1888 but the layout we play today is largely the result of MacKenzie’s redesign in 1927.
The course plays to a demanding Par 72, stretching to approximately 6,813 yards from the championship tees, a true test of length and precision. Since it’s built on free-draining limestone, you’ll find the turf surprisingly firm and fast, almost like a links course despite its Inner Harbour location near Cork City. That underlying limestone is what really gives the course its unique crisp playing surface and allows it to incorporate its most distinctive feature, the dramatic old quarry.

Key Information
The routing at Cork is pretty unique, offering a wonderful blend of terrain and challenges you don’t often see in one round. The opening holes work their way beautifully along the edge of Lough Mahon, the inner reaches of Cork Harbor, with the river demanding a long, precise carry, particularly on the Par 5 fifth hole. Worth noting, the true genius of the design really begins to reveal itself as you step onto the sixth tee. Here, you dive headfirst into the dramatic, historic limestone quarry.
This five-hole stretch is completely exhilarating, defined by sharp chasms, elevation changes, and greens that appear almost precariously perched on the quarry edge. It’s an intellectual challenge as much as a physical one, forcing you to think creatively about your angles and trajectory. The finishing holes then bring you back out to more open parkland, a slightly different feel, but maintaining the MacKenzie signature of large, wonderfully contoured greens that demand both skill and respect. You’ll find it’s just a beautifully balanced course, with truly not a weak hole in the entire rotation.
