The Island is a fantastic, somewhat quirky course defined by enormous sand dunes and an almost complete absence of trees, making it a true wind-based links challenge. While it was once famous for starting with a long run of straight par fours, the layout now offers a much richer variety of challenges right from the start. You’ll quickly notice the constant movement in the fairways, the ridges, and the hollows that demand calculated approaches rather than simple power. The opening stretch, while tough, gives way to some incredible holes closer to the water.
The back nine is particularly compelling as the land gets wilder and the course funnels out toward the sea, truly living up to its name. The signature 13th, “Broadmeadow,” is an unforgettable, long par three that demands a massive carry over treacherous ground to a guarded green. Worth noting is the short par four 14th, which some describe as having one of the narrowest fairways in all of golf. It’s a beautiful risk-and-reward hole that perfectly captures the sense of adventure here. You’ll finish your round thoroughly satisfied, having been tested by a course that uses its natural landscape to brilliant effect.
