Southern Dunes: Florida’s Surprising Upland Challenge
The essential details of this special course are pretty easy to track, but the experience is anything but typical for the region. Steve Smyers, a designer known for his bold, strategic approach, put this 18-hole track on the map back in 1993. It’s a par 72 that stretches out past 7,200 yards from the tips, making it quite the demanding test for any low-handicapper looking for a true challenge. That said, it’s also incredibly playable for the everyday golfer, offering four other sets of tees.
It operates as a resort-style, public-access course, a truly essential stop for any traveler focused on a top-tier Florida golf vacation.

Key Information
What instantly strikes you about Southern Dunes is the sheer scale of the land and the dramatic vertical movement. For many golfers, it’s a shock to see such significant elevation changes, cresting near 100 feet, which just isn’t what you expect in the Orlando area. Smyers designed this course to be thought-provoking, not just a brute-force test of distance. The fairways are wide, almost invitingly so, but they’re also extremely undulating, which means you’re constantly dealing with tricky lies.
The true defense of this course, however, is the remarkable number of strategically placed bunkers, well over 170 of them, and the enormous, complex greens. They’re famously fast and often feature dramatic internal contours. On the front nine, you’ll find the routing pretty open, really encouraging you to take a thoughtful approach off the tee and focus on setting up a precise second shot. The back nine, in contrast, tightens up a little and feels more demanding, with the par five 13th and the closing stretch offering a thrilling finish. It’s easy to see why it consistently ranks among the state’s very best public courses; it’s a design that rewards intelligent play on every single hole.

We Book every year!!
We have used this company for 5 years now when we bumped into them at the bunkered road show. They always delivers on recommendations and sorting our group of 24 golfers. Finds great deals and we just turn up and everything is taken care of. Great service.
5 star service
What a brilliant service from them. Booked 1 night 2 rounds at Stoke by Nayland and everything was perfect. Their expertise is faultless and all 36 of us thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The staff at resort were amazing and so was the food and course. Highly recommend using this company and Ian is a diamond to deal with. 5 Stars plus lads.

Beyond the Fairways: A Complete Golf Vacation
While Southern Dunes is nestled in Haines City, which feels just a little outside the central tourist buzz, its location is actually perfect for the dedicated traveler. It means you’re close enough to the major resort areas for convenience, yet you get to enjoy a slightly quieter, more focused golf environment. The clubhouse offers all the amenities an experienced golfer needs, including excellent practice facilities where you can truly hone your iron play and, critically, get used to the speed and movement of those famously tricky greens. Many guests love the service level here, finding the staff knowledgeable and focused on providing a seamless day of golf.
You’ll find a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere paired with high-quality dining options perfect for an after-round meal. When planning your Florida vacation, it’s essential to pair world-class design with convenience. Southern Dunes delivers on both.
