The Presidio Golf Course is a truly special place, rooted deep in San Francisco’s history, having first opened way back in 1895. It holds the distinction of being one of the oldest courses west of the Mississippi River. The original layout, expanded and refined by designers including the British firm Fowler & Simpson in 1921, now offers a rugged and strategic parkland test.
It plays as a par 72, measuring in around 6,480 yards from the black tees, which might sound manageable until you account for the severe elevation changes and the heavy air of the City by the Bay. What’s unique is its location; the course is entirely situated within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, a former military post now open to the public, ensuring a dramatic and unforgettable backdrop for your round.

The narrative of a round at Presidio is dominated by its terrain and its magnificent, towering trees. This course does not allow for a simple grip-it-and-rip-it approach. The design philosophy constantly demands creative shot-shaping and exceptional course management due to the narrow corridors and steep changes in elevation. Many of your lies will be side hill or downhill, meaning you’ll need to focus on the demands of every single shot.
The course plays significantly longer than the scorecard suggests because of the constant uphill treks and the cool, dense atmosphere. Worth noting is the back side, which offers some of the most dramatic views. The uphill par-five 10th, framed beautifully by eucalyptus, is a brutal climb that makes par a genuine achievement for the experienced player. It’s an old-school design that rewards accuracy and smart thinking, making it a truly unique experience among modern championship venues.
