Pasatiempo Golf Club is widely regarded as one of the finest public-access courses in the world and a cornerstone of American golf architecture. Designed by the legendary Dr. Alister MacKenzie—the mind behind Augusta National and Cypress Point—and opened in 1929, the course remains remarkably true to his original vision.
After a comprehensive restoration by Tom Doak’s Renaissance Golf Design in 2007, the course’s rugged bunkering and bold green complexes were returned to their former glory. It plays as a par 70, measuring 6,495 yards from the championship tees. While it may seem short by modern standards, its defense lies in its incredible topography and some of the most complex, challenging greens in the game.

The strategic challenge at Pasatiempo is defined by two primary elements: the natural barrancas (ravines) that crisscross the property and the legendary MacKenzie greens. The course demands heroic carries and precise positioning to avoid the deep, jagged-edged bunkers that frame the landing areas. Unlike many modern courses, Pasatiempo requires you to think several shots ahead; being on the wrong side of the hole on these undulating, multi-tiered greens can lead to a certain three-putt.
The back nine is often cited as the greatest in golf, beginning with the spectacular 10th hole and culminating in the famous par-three 16th, which features a massive three-tiered green. The round concludes with a dramatic par three over a deep barranca to a green situated just below the clubhouse. It is a relentless, engaging, and visually stunning test that rewards creativity and short-game mastery.
