The Hidden Hills of Florida Golf: A True Elevation Experience
This is a spectacular 36-hole facility, which is a big asset for travelers planning multiple rounds. While the complimentary North Course offers a pleasant second eighteen, the real destination draw is the South Course. Opened in 1999, the South Course was a collaboration between US Open Champion Tom Lehman and architect Kurt Sandness. It’s a spectacular par 72 that stretches to 7,153 yards from the back tees, making it a proper championship test.
While it’s technically a semi-private course, you’ll find it accessible through Stay & Play packages, offering experienced travelers a chance to challenge a layout that has hosted PGA Tour Qualifying School events. The course features generous, rolling fairways lined with mature oaks, and its most distinguishing characteristic is the incredible topography, offering elevation changes that simply don’t exist in most of Florida.

The South Course at Lake Jovita is a complete anomaly for central Florida golf, and that’s precisely why many guests love it. Tom Lehman and Kurt Sandness masterfully utilized the rare, naturally hilly terrain to create a truly varied and strategic experience. The front nine starts out pretty strong, demanding accuracy right from the start with some tighter, tree-lined driving corridors. You’ll quickly notice the impeccable conditioning and the quality of the TifEagle Bermuda greens, which are quite fast and demand a precise, thoughtful approach.
Worth noting, the true star of the show here is the back nine, which features the club’s signature elevation changes. The par-5 11th hole is a memorable example, boasting a dramatic 94-foot drop from the tee to the green, which is apparently the largest natural elevation change in the entire state. It’s a risk-reward hole where you’ll need to decide whether to attack the green in two or lay up strategically. The whole layout is defined by this movement, forcing you to constantly calculate yardage differences based on uphill and downhill lies. This isn’t your typical flat Florida course; it requires an all-around game, from driver to putter, and you’ll find the experience both challenging and exhilarating.
