Key Facts for the Experienced Traveler

The Island Golf Club, one of Ireland’s oldest and most respected links, is precisely what its name suggests: a dramatic course bordered by the sea on three sides, tucked away in the massive dunes near Malahide. The club was established back in 1890, giving it a rich pedigree that you can feel from the moment you arrive.

The course plays to a par 72, stretching over 7,200 yards from the competition tees, ensuring a proper test for even the longest hitters. Recent, thoughtful architectural work by Mackenzie & Ebert has elevated the front nine to match the historic drama of the back, adding more variety with a few new holes. It remains a private member’s club but is well-known for its welcoming approach to discerning international travelers seeking a genuine Irish links experience.

Key Information

The Island is a fantastic, somewhat quirky course defined by enormous sand dunes and an almost complete absence of trees, making it a true wind-based links challenge. While it was once famous for starting with a long run of straight par fours, the layout now offers a much richer variety of challenges right from the start. You’ll quickly notice the constant movement in the fairways, the ridges, and the hollows that demand calculated approaches rather than simple power. The opening stretch, while tough, gives way to some incredible holes closer to the water.

The back nine is particularly compelling as the land gets wilder and the course funnels out toward the sea, truly living up to its name. The signature 13th, “Broadmeadow,” is an unforgettable, long par three that demands a massive carry over treacherous ground to a guarded green. Worth noting is the short par four 14th, which some describe as having one of the narrowest fairways in all of golf. It’s a beautiful risk-and-reward hole that perfectly captures the sense of adventure here. You’ll finish your round thoroughly satisfied, having been tested by a course that uses its natural landscape to brilliant effect.

The Best of the Coast and the Clubhouse

The location of The Island is a huge selling point for any sophisticated golf traveler. It’s set on a stunning, isolated peninsula, giving you that peaceful, remote feeling of a destination course, yet it’s only a short drive from the charming town of Malahide and a comfortable distance from the buzz of Dublin city. You get the rugged golf during the day and the cultural experiences in the evening. As for the club itself, the practice facilities are excellent, featuring a full-range area to help you hone that essential links punch shot.

The traditional, welcoming clubhouse is an absolute treat after a round battling the Irish weather. The food is consistently praised, and you’ll want to take time there to recount the day’s adventures over a drink, overlooking the same dunes you just conquered. We find the service here to be extremely warm and professional, emphasizing the best traditions of amateur golf. Ready to tee off at one of Ireland’s most beautiful and historic links?
