The Classic Florida Challenge: St Johns Golf & Country Club
You’ll find the St Johns course is a pretty essential stop for any serious Florida golf vacation. It was the brainchild of the always-reliable design team of Clyde Johnston, opening its doors in 2001. The routing is a handsome par 72 that stretches out a little over 7,200 yards from the tips, which gives it a proper championship feel without becoming overly punitive. The layout maintains that quintessential resort-style conditioning, meaning everything is clean, immaculate, and ready for play.
That said, it’s also a course that gets quite a bit of local play, so it maintains a real, grounded atmosphere alongside the high-end appeal.

Key Information
What makes St Johns such a consistent favorite is how seamlessly it merges a classic Florida resort experience with some really thoughtful, strategic architecture. Johnston’s philosophy here was clearly to reward precise iron play and smart course management rather than just raw distance. You’ll notice immediately that the course sits on some beautifully rolling, natural terrain, a little different than the flat landscape you might expect in this part of the state. The front nine is quite open and welcoming, giving you a chance to settle in and find your rhythm, though you’ll still need to navigate some well-placed bunkers and the ever-present water hazards. The par fives on this side are particularly enjoyable, offering genuine risk reward.
Then you make the turn, and things get a little tighter. The back nine demands slightly more focus off the tee. Worth noting, the 17th is often cited as a signature hole. It’s a challenging par four that requires a pinpoint approach over water to a protected green, making it a wonderful and dramatic moment late in the round. The atmosphere is always pretty relaxed, but make no mistake, it’s a course that will ask you to hit every club in the bag if you want to post a good number.
