Royal St George’s Golf Club, located in Sandwich, Kent, is a true monumental site in golf history. Founded in 1887, it was the first course outside of Scotland to host The Open Championship in 1894. This 18-hole links (Par 70, Max Tees: approximately 7,204 yards) has since hosted The Open fifteen times, cementing its reputation as one of the hardest, most strategic links in the rotation. The course, largely influenced by Dr. Laidlaw Purves and later refined by Tom Simpson, is defined by its unusual, natural contours and its dramatic sand dunes. Notably, it lacks any artificial watering systems for its fairways, guaranteeing that pure, firm, bouncy links turf that demands creativity and masterful control of the golf ball.

Royal St George’s presents a course experience utterly defined by its terrain. Unlike the flatter links of nearby Deal, the fairways here are wildly undulating, throwing the ball into unpredictable positions and giving you uneven lies almost constantly. This is the ultimate test of control and imagination. The course is famous for its massive, deep bunkers, particularly the colossal “Suez Canal” bunker that guards the 4th fairway and the deep, often unplayable bunker near the 6th green.
The architecture is subtle and brilliant, requiring you to play away from targets to compensate for the wind and the ground contours. The routing offers constant variety, weaving through valleys and up onto higher ground for several dramatic tees, including the view from the 8th. This is an uncompromising challenge where the player who can master the ground game will be greatly rewarded.
