Modern Links That Redefined Irish Seaside Golf
Brittas Bay Club, formerly known as The European Club, is undergoing a major transformation into a redesigned championship links course on Ireland’s east coast. Originally created by Pat Ruddy, the course is being reworked by renowned architect Kyle Phillips, whose portfolio includes Kingsbarns and Yas Links.
The new layout will feature 18 holes winding through towering dunes, with wider fairways, improved sea views and more opportunities to play different types of shots. The coastal winds, natural contours and strategically positioned bunkers will still provide a proper links challenge, but the redesign aims to make the course more enjoyable for golfers of different abilities.
The club is also developing upgraded facilities, including a clubhouse restaurant overlooking the Irish Sea, a pro shop and changing facilities. There is no established on-site hotel accommodation, so visitors can stay in nearby Wicklow or combine their round with a longer golf trip around Dublin.

Expect a classic Irish links setting with a fresh approach to championship golf when Brittas Bay Club reopens in 2027. The redesigned course promises firm fescue fairways, towering dunes and sweeping views across the Irish Sea, with coastal winds adding plenty of unpredictability.
Wider landing areas should make the experience more welcoming for everyday golfers, although strategic bunkering and challenging greens will still reward thoughtful shot making. There’s genuine golfing history here too, with past victories from Pádraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy. With the course currently undergoing redevelopment, final playing conditions remain untested, but the ambition is certainly exciting.
