Classic Hilton Head Golf, Pure and Uncut
For many travelers coming to the lowcountry for a golf vacation, the Barony Course at Port Royal Plantation is a must play, and it’s easy to see why it has such a reputation. Originally opening in 1963, this terrific 18 hole layout was designed by George Cobb, a giant in the golden age of American golf course architecture, and it still reflects his timeless philosophy.
Playing to a par of 72, the course stretches to a little over 6,500 yards from the back tees, which is a manageable but definite test for skilled golfers. That said, it’s pretty approachable for players of all abilities, making it an ideal resort course. It operates as part of the resort’s three-course rotation, maintaining a consistent, high quality of access and conditioning for all guests.

Key Information
The Barony Course is built around a beautifully simple design philosophy: reward intelligent play, not just brute strength. What really stands out here is the traditional parkland feel; the course weaves through dense maritime forests, using subtle elevation changes and strategically placed bunkers to keep you honest. Worth noting, the front nine offers a slightly more open feel with some generous landing areas off the tee, encouraging you to settle into your rhythm before things tighten up a little.
When you make the turn, the back nine really increases the pressure, demanding precision, especially on approach shots to the relatively small, quick greens. It’s a design that’s stood the test of time, proving that great architecture never relies on gimmicks. Many guests love the signature 8th hole, a par three that is visually stunning, requiring a forced carry over water to a protected green. It’s one of those holes you’ll remember long after your vacation is over because it forces a confident, perfectly struck iron shot.
