A Ryder Cup Venue

Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club (S&A) is a foundational element of the renowned Lancashire links coastline, standing proudly between the more famous Royal Birkdale and Formby Golf Club. This classic 18-hole links (Par 72, Max Tees: approximately 6,900 yards) was founded in 1906, but its prestige soared after it was extensively redesigned by the legendary architect James Braid in the 1920s.

Braid’s demanding vision quickly elevated the course’s profile, leading to S&A hosting the Ryder Cup twice—in 1933 and again in 1937—making it one of the few British venues with such a distinction. The course retains Braid’s strategic DNA, featuring distinct links characteristics: penal pot bunkers, undulating fairways, and challenging green complexes. It is consistently maintained to high standards and regularly hosts Open Championship Final Qualifying.

Key Information

Playing S&A is a pure, traditional links experience. The course winds wonderfully through towering, mature sandhills, which provide sheltered pockets one minute and completely exposed, wind-swept tees the next. Braid’s design philosophy here was heavily focused on strategy; it’s not simply a course you can overpower. You’ll notice the exceptional bunkering, which is perfectly placed to catch anything less than a precisely executed shot—the classic Revetted bunkers are deep and unforgiving.

The course is known for its excellent variety of holes, including several outstanding Par 3s that play across valleys or into the high dunes. The firm turf demands creativity and the ability to play low running shots, especially when the Irish Sea wind is gusting. It’s a slightly wilder, more rugged experience than its immediate neighbor, Royal Birkdale, offering the traveling golfer a genuine taste of old-school links golf heritage that rewards intelligent play over sheer distance.

A Sanctuary by the Sea

Southport & Ainsdale’s location is perfect for a golf vacation, being centrally situated within a ten-minute drive of four separate Open Championship venues. S&A’s isolation by the coast gives it a tranquil feeling, yet the vibrant seaside town of Southport is easily accessible for dining and accommodation. The atmosphere in the clubhouse reflects its historic past and is notably warm and welcoming to visitors.

The club takes pride in its Ryder Cup heritage, and you’ll find a clear sense of tradition inside its walls. For the experienced traveler planning a multi-day links trip along the Lancashire Coast, S&A offers a vital piece of history and a truly demanding round. Because it sits slightly below the Royal courses in terms of visitor volume, it often provides a slightly more intimate and relaxed experience while delivering the same high standard of challenge and conditioning.
